Stress can impact all sectors of business, whether public or private, large or small. With the current economic climate, business and their employees are being put under more and more pressure to deliver with less and less resources. COVID, BREXIT, the economic climate changes and recessions have seen an increase in the levels psycho-social stressors in the workplace.
Approximately 79% of all UK employees say that they feel worn out by work and suffer from work related stress. This accounts for mental illnesses and over 50% of work absences, costing British businesses an estimated 12.8m in lost working days. .
The main reasons that people gave for feeling stressed, depressed or anxious at work were workload pressures, including tight deadlines and too much responsibility and a lack of managerial support. All of which is common place in most organisations. In addition to these factors, reduction in job security, increased workloads and increases in inter-personal conflict at work, has meant that work related stress has taken on a new and much for aggressive form, with work stressors in Britain consistently increasing since 2009.
With recent unprecedented times caused by COVID-19, many people have had to adapt with complete new ways of working, which can bring about its own challenges and stresses and may find that they need more support than before and in different ways.
The benefits of flexible working have somewhat been reversed by the increased hours worked, balancing home and work, pressure to continue to deliver as well as the other stressors mentioned. The increased stress factors also lead to a wide range of health issues, such as depression, anxiety disorders, cardiovascular disease and even suicide.
