Stress can impact all sectors of business, whether public or private, large or small. With the current economic climate, business and their employees are being put under more and more pressure to deliver with less and less resources. The economic climate changes and recessions have seen an increase in the levels psycho-social stressors in the workplace.
The total number of working days lost due to stress and stress related illnesses in 2015/16 was approx 12 million days and stress accounted for just below 40% of all work related ill health issues. The main reasons that people gave for feeling stressed, depressed or anxious at work were workload pressures, including tight deadlines and too much responsibility and a lack of managerial support. All of which is common place in most organisations. In addition to these factors, reduction in job security, increased workloads and increases in inter-personal conflict at work, has meant that work related stress has taken on a new and much for aggressive form, with work stressors in Britain increasing since 2009.
The benefits of flexible working have somewhat been reversed by the increased hours worked and pressure to deliver as well as the other stressors mentioned. The increased stress factors also lead to a wide range of health issues, such as depression, anxiety disorders, cardiovascular disease and even suicide. These health issues will not only economically impact the individual, but society and the business and productivity reduces.
